Shanghai General Hospital Sports Medicine Department launches long-term international visiting program

The Sports Medicine Department of Shanghai General Hospital is welcoming orthopaedic and sports medicine doctors from around the world for 1- to 6-month visiting placements focused on arthroscopy, sports injury care, and clinical observation.

Program overview

The Department of Sports Medicine at Shanghai General Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, is recruiting international visiting doctors for long-term observership and advanced clinical learning in arthroscopy and sports medicine.

The program is designed for orthopaedic and sports medicine physicians who wish to deepen their understanding of shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and ankle sports injury care in a high-volume tertiary public hospital in China.

About Gongji Sports Medicine

Founded in 2021, the Sports Medicine Department at Shanghai General Hospital is one of the key sports medicine centers under focused development in Shanghai. The department is dedicated to minimally invasive arthroscopic treatment of bone and joint disorders and sports injuries involving the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and ankle.

The department currently includes 14 specialist physicians and 20 postgraduate trainees, including 3 chief physicians, 3 associate chief physicians, 2 doctoral supervisors, and 1 master’s supervisor. In 2025, the team completed more than 4,000 sports medicine procedures, covering the full spectrum of sports medicine surgery.

  • The clinical scope includes anterior and posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction
  • meniscus repair and suturing
  • rotator cuff repair and shoulder instability reconstruction
  • hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement and labral injury
  • treatment of patellar instability and cartilage repair
  • and elbow and ankle arthroscopy, including procedures related to osteoarthritis.

Academically, the team leads multiple national and Shanghai-level research projects, has received several grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and has published more than 140 papers in China and abroad. More than 20 of these publications have appeared in leading international sports medicine journals. Ongoing research areas include tissue repair, AI-assisted arthroscopy, mixed-reality navigation, 3D printing, and tissue engineering.

Faculty leadership

Visiting doctors will learn within the clinical practice led by Professor Jiwu Chen, Professor Luning Sun, and Professor Hui Cheng. The program emphasizes the full process of sports injury management, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, surgical decision-making, rehabilitation strategy, and follow-up.

Professor Jiwu Chen, MD

Professor Jiwu Chen, MD, serves as Director of the Department of Sports Medicine at Shanghai General Hospital. He is a highly distinguished orthopaedic surgeon and one of the pioneers of minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine in China. He currently serves as Chairman of the Shanghai Sports Medicine Association and holds positions in multiple national and international academic organizations, including ISAKOS, ISHA, and ESSKA. With more than three decades of clinical practice, Professor Jiwu Chen combines high-volume precision surgery with systematic rehabilitation pathways to improve joint function and patient quality of life.

Professor Luning Sun, MD

Professor Luning Sun, MD, serves as Executive Director of the Department of Sports Medicine. He is well known in China for his expertise in complex shoulder and knee disorders, including ACL injury, patellar dislocation, rotator cuff tears, shoulder dislocation, and frozen shoulder. He was among the early surgeons in China to perform reverse total shoulder arthroplasty, anatomical single-bundle ACL reconstruction with a 6-strand hamstring autograft, and double-bundle MPFL reconstruction for patellar dislocation.

Professor Hui Cheng, MD

Professor Hui Cheng, MD, is a leading hip surgeon in the department. He serves as a member of the Hip Preservation Group under the Committee of Repair and Reconstruction of the Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine and as a member of the Hip Committee of the Chinese Sports Medicine Association. His practice focuses on both conservative and surgical treatment of hip disorders in adults and children, including hip arthroscopy, periacetabular osteotomy, and femoral derotation osteotomy.

What visiting doctors will learn

During the program, visiting doctors may observe arthroscopic surgery involving the shoulder, hip, knee, elbow, and ankle, and will also have opportunities to participate in outpatient clinics and follow-up work.

Training plans can be arranged according to each doctor’s subspecialty background and learning goals.

The department values a strong academic atmosphere, close integration of surgery and rehabilitation, and systematic exposure to the evolving concepts of sports medicine in China. The platform combines clinical practice, teaching resources, and scientific research within a major Class A tertiary public hospital.

Fees, duration, and accommodation

There is no program fee. The duration of the program is flexible, ranging from 1 to 6 months.

For accommodation, departmental staff can refer visiting doctors to a rental agent to help them settle in Shanghai.
